There is a particular light here: slanting across vine-laced hills, gilding pale stone façades in golden brushstrokes. The land keeps its own pace: horses still turn the fields, hands tend the rows of vines and every gesture bears the imprint of centuries of care. This is a place where tradition is not simply preserved but lived daily.

At the centre of this landscape stands Château de Pommard, at once a house of hospitality and a guardian of one of Burgundy’s most distinguished vineyards. Founded in the 18th century, its classical architecture reflects a lineage of refinement, where regenerative winemaking and land care make it an essential touchstone for any admirer of French wine and culture.

At Château de Pommard, wine tasting expands above the sensory providing an inheritance of ancient knowledge of terroir and craft. Private tastings move from the Clos, a walled vineyard dating back to the medieval era, to rare library bottles, while cellar tours trace the slow alchemy of barrel and time. Seasonal dinners celebrate the land itself, pairing estate wines with produce cultivated from its gardens. For those who seek history steeped in luxury, Château de Pommard is both a destination and an education.

Yet the story of Burgundy is larger than any single estate. Around Pommard, villages are embedded in the countryside like stepping stones scattered across a landscape of vines. Each town is an island of taste and tradition, contributing its own notes to Burgundy’s great composition of wine and culture. Burgundy’s wine story is as old as the vines themselves. The Romans planted the first cuttings, but it was the monks of Cluny and Cîteaux who, in the Middle Ages, truly gave Burgundy its voice. With patient devotion, they studied the soils, the slopes, the light, and marked each vineyard parcel — the climats — as if they were sacred texts. From their hands came the idea of terroir: that every patch of earth carries its own character, its own expression in the glass. To explore the towns of Burgundy is to glimpse the deeper story of this land – where regenerative viticulture, food and tradition walk the centuries hand in hand. This reverence endures: every vintage a continuation of an unbroken dialogue between the soil and the grower.

First, there is Pommard itself. The village of Pommard enhances this narrative of place: honeyed, stone houses with classic shutters quietly line the narrow lanes. At its weekly market, sausages smoked over vine prunings, terrines dense with flavour, and leafy salads bright with walnut oil speak of the village’s hearty generosity. The square thrums with dialect and laughter, where neighbours barter not for price but for continuity, honouring rituals passed down through generations.

A short drive away, the town of Beaune rises encircled by medieval ramparts and crowned by the polychrome tiles of its Gothic Hospice. Stalls overflow with heirloom tomatoes that blush crimson in the morning light, garlic strung like rosaries, and cheeses that speak of pasture and patience: delicate chèvre wrapped in chestnut leaves, aged Comté and Époisses oozing with character. Beaune has always been Burgundy’s marketplace, a crossroads where produce, wine and conversation mingle.

By contrast, the markets of Volnay and Meursault offer a more intimate rhythm, with markets gathered beneath lime trees or along narrow cobbled streets. The air carries the aroma of freshly baked loaves, the sweet scent of buttery croissants and the earthiness of the nearby groves. Local dairies set out their creams and butters, pale and silken, while winemakers pause to share stories of the year gone by. These villages move at a gentler pace, embodying tradition with enduring grace.
